A woman is accusing her mother of trying to make her brother’s engagement plans about herself.
The woman, 20, asked Reddit users in a post on the platform’s “Am I the A——” forum whether or not she was in the wrong for not calling an ambulance for her mother, 50, after she “fainted” when her brother, 25, announced his intention to propose to his girlfriend. The Redditor believes her mother’s medical emergency was completely faked, so she refused to help.
When the woman’s brother “casually” shared that he “wanted to marry his girlfriend,” their mother started “a screaming match about it” because she “doesn’t like” his girlfriend. As the siblings began to walk away from the argument, their mother suddenly “fainted,” looking “like a fish flopping around” as she made “pain noises while writhing on the ground.”

“My brother and I just stared at her, as it honestly looked like an adult throwing a tantrum,” the woman recalled. “She told us she was having a heart attack and to call 911. When neither of us did, she screamed that we were selfish children letting her die.”
After a few minutes, the mother got up and was “totally fine,” apart from being “pissed” that her children didn’t help her.
Offering context, the Redditor claimed that her mother has been a “narcissist” for as long as she can remember, and that it’s only getting “worse” with age. From “faking medical issues or illness to get attention” to “screaming and fake crying when someone says she’s in the wrong,” the mother “has to make everything about herself always.”
“She’s always twisting someone else’s problems to make it about her or lying about the dumbest s— to gain attention,” the woman wrote, noting that “heart disease” has been her mother’s latest faux condition.

Fellow Reddit users had mixed opinions on the scenario. Some agreed that it was the right choice to not call an ambulance in order to not waste emergency professionals’ precious time and resources if the mother was faking, while others thought the mother having to pay a hefty ambulance fee might teach her a lesson.

“Just call them next time,” the top comment reads. “She will have to pay a lot of money for these reindeer games she is playing, assuming they are as you think they are, unreal.”
Someone else agreed, writing, “Either she is having a heart attack and it saves her life, or she’s faking and she either gets a huge bill or she’ll be metaphorically flayed alive by the hospital.”
