Woman, 90, Earns Guinness World Record After Teaching for 67 Years: ‘I Have No Plans for Retirement’

A 90-year-old woman in Michigan just earned the Guinness World Record for longest career as a female language teacher.

English teacher Beverly Hannett-Price has taught at Detroit Country Day School for more than 67 consecutive years, per WXYZ Detroit.

Hannett-Price received the honor during what she and students thought was going to be a typical school assembly on Monday, Feb. 2.

“Students, faculty and invited guests, I am thrilled to announce the real reason we are all here today. Mrs. Hannett-Price has earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records,” a school staff member said in a video of the assembly shared to the school’s Facebook page.

Hannett-Price can then be seen holding up a framed certificate commemorating the moment.

“Surprised?” she said while speaking to WXYZ Detroit about the honor. “I am floored!” 

"I have no plans for retirement,” she added. “I  love this school. I love teaching.”

Hannett-Price has taught thousands of students over the years, some of whom flew back to Detroit for the surprise assembly.

“She really taught me how to write and to put wonderful thoughts together, and because of that, we've stayed in touch," Courtney B. Vance, an award-winning actor and former student who traveled from Los Angeles for the assembly, told the outlet.

Her granddaughter, Charlotte Cook, who was also in attendance for the special day, said that her grandmother frequently gets approached by former students whenever she leaves the house.

"Every time we go out, we meet someone that she has impacted, and it's almost inspired me to become someone that can make that much of an impact everywhere you go," Cook said.

Hannett-Price went on to share her personal philosophy about teaching and inspiring others.

"You be the best version of yourself you can possibly be because there will never be another you," she said while speaking to the outlet.

She also encourages others to go through life with an open mind and heart.

"Be accepting — you can meet the most wonderful people … open your mind to the possibility," she said.
