Why Brooks & Dunn’s Ronnie Dunn Walked Off Stage During Encore

Ronnie Dunn unexpectedly stopped a performance in Indianapolis.

Attendees at the Brooks & Dunn concert at Gainbridge Fieldhouse were left feeling concerned when Dunn, 71, walked off stage during an encore performance of the band’s 1991 hit song “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” on April 3.

Radio host Matt Malone shared a video of the moment on TikTok, which sees Dunn suddenly stop singing before encouraging the audience to “sing it if you know it.” He then gestures to a bandmate before walking to the front of the stage. Dunn points to the audience, pats his chest, and waves before making a quick exit. 

“Feel better, Ronnie!!! Thanks for giving us all you could,” Malone wrote in the caption of his video.

Dunn was seen sitting at some moments during the concert, according to Taste of Country. Fans also claimed the singer sounded “winded” at times, per the outlet.

Reps for Brooks & Dunn and Ronnie Dunn did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, April 6.

Last month, Dunn was battling strep throat and COVID. During his March 22 show at NRG Stadium in Houston, he told the audience, “We call it strovid… If you hear the wrong notes tonight, we’ll blame it on that. Any other time it’s just me,” Houston Press reported.  

According to the outlet, “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” was the second to last song of the March 22 setlist and was followed by “Only in America.”

The Country Music Hall of Fame inductee had spoken about being ill in a March 19 Instagram post, writing, “Had to fight through the last two shows (the flu and strep aren’t a singer’s friend…) Crowds have been terrific and thanks to the best band and crew in the business we’ve powered through it…Spending a couple of days to recoup in Austin before circling back through Lubbock and on to @rodeohouston.”

Dunn’s latest Instagram post, written in collaboration with bandmate Kix Brooks, makes no mention of his sickness. “The NEON MOON shines bright over Indy, Peoria and Chicago this weekend. Stay safe! Stay dry,” they wrote on April 3. 

The band continues their Neon Moon tour on April 24 in Iowa, before visiting Missouri, Kentucky, Texas and more. The show dates come after they released their latest album Reboot II in November 2024. 

Dunn and Brooks previously spoke to PEOPLE in an exclusive interview about their tour and teased that they have some other things on their mind for the year.

“We have to stop and remind ourselves that we’re songwriters and we need to play with that a little bit,” Dunn said. “So, we’re going back and forth with some other stuff.”
