Viral Video Shows Monkeys Chasing a Scared Tourist Out of a Hotel Pool

A British tourist found himself surrounded by a group of monkeys in Thailand and caught the overwhelming experience on camera.

Kane Smith shared footage from the incident in a March 19 TikTok. The clip starts with Smith lounging in a Thai hotel swimming pool. Monkeys soon begin to surround the pool and the tourist.

“POV: One minute you’re living the dream in Thailand…the next you’re in a nightmare,” Smith wrote on his video.

Newsflare reported that Smith was staying at a hotel on the large island of Koh Samui — a filming location for Season 3 of The White Lotus — when the macaque monkeys appeared from a nearby wooded area.

The viral video, which has over 7 million views on TikTok, shows monkeys inching closer and closer to Smith as he tries to back away from the animals to the other side of the pool.

“Oh my f—ing god,” he says repeatedly. “No, go away.” The monkeys stop to drink the water in the footage, and then more macaques appear – including a larger monkey and another carrying a baby.

“Don’t come near me,” Smith warns the monkeys, who continue to surround him.

At some point, it becomes clear to Smith that the monkeys are not backing off, so the tourist scrambles to exit the pool. The monkeys proceed to chase the TikToker as he exits the pool but pause when Smith makes a loud, aggressive noise in their direction.

“Honestly, the scariest moment of my life 😭😭 I apologize for all the swearing.. kinda thought my life was about to end,” Smith captioned the video. “Started off with one monkey, and then a full gang suddenly appeared.”

In a follow-up video, the traveler told his worried followers, “I’m here, I’m alive.”

“I survived the monkeys,” he added after panning his camera to show his new oceanside location.

In a different update video, Smith explained what happened after he got out of the pool. “I literally jumped into the first room. Luckily, it was open, and no one was in there. I don’t know if it was like a conference room, but I jumped into the first room possible,” he shared.

The tourist said before the terrifying encounter, he was on the rooftop pool “talking to some friends and taking in the views because the views were incredible.”

When a TikTok commenter asked why Smith had not gotten out of the pool sooner in his viral clip, he explained in a third follow-up video that the monkeys were coming from the main exit area.

Per Newsflare, Thailand “has a large population of wild monkeys across the country” despite efforts to control their population, including “multiple sterilization programs.”
