Timothée Chalamet takes pride in his work on the film Marty Supreme, but his latest comments about his performance have left fans divided.
“This is probably my best performance, you know, and it’s been, like, seven, eight years that I feel like I’ve been handing in really, really committed, top-of-the-line performances,” Chalamet, 29, said in a recent interview with Margaret Gardiner. “And it’s important to say it out loud because the discipline and the work ethic I’m bringing to these things — I don’t want people to take it for granted. I don’t want to take it for granted. This is really some top-level s***.”
Clips from the interview began circulating via social media, prompting many to weigh in with their opinions on X.
“He’s doing a bit much… wait for the people to see it and give you acclaim before you tell them that they should be giving you acclaim 😭😭😭,” one X user wrote, as a second person defended the actor, replying, “Literally never said anyone should be giving him acclaim he’s just proud good job missing the point.”
“This sounds less like confidence and more like someone daring Hollywood to raise its standards with him,” a third person wrote, while a fourth X user said, “He’s hungry for that oscar trophy.”
“There’s a difference between being proud of your work and whatever the hell this is,” another person noted, as someone else said, “The greats put in top of the line performances and let the audience make their own mind up.”
“I literally don’t see the issue with praising your own work and recognizing that you did an amazing job😂😂😂,” another comment read.
Chalamet earned a 2026 Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Marty Supreme as well as a nod for Best Actor for the 2026 Critics Choice Awards.

The nominations are familiar territory for the Wonka actor, who is a two-time Academy Award nominee and won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role for A Complete Unknown earlier this year. While accepting the award, Chalamet delivered an impassioned speech about his career.
“I know we’re in a subjective business, but the truth is, I’m really in pursuit of greatness. I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats,” he said at the February ceremony. “I’m inspired by the greats. I’m inspired by the greats here tonight. I’m as inspired by Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando and Viola Davis as I am by Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, and I want to be up there. So, I’m deeply grateful. This doesn’t signify that, but it’s a little more fuel. It’s a little more ammo to keep going. Thank you so much.”
Marty Supreme stars Chalamet as aspiring ping-pong champion Marty Mauser, with supporting performances from Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler, the Creator, Abel Ferrara and Fran Drescher. “A young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness,” the film’s official synopsis says.
