Threads Adds Image Sharing in DMs

Threads Adds Image Sharing in DMs

Threads has added another element to its DM functionality, with users now able to send photos in messages.

As you can see in this example, Threads users can now add images to their messages in-stream, providing another way to expand the context of your private communications.

As explained by Threads:

In your inbox, open an existing conversation or start a new one, then tap the plus icon at the bottom left. To send a still image from your camera roll, tap ‘Media,’ then ‘Send.’ To take a new photo, tap ‘Camera,’ then ‘Use Photo’ to send it.”

So it’s pretty straightforward functionality, which replicates the image sharing options in other DM tools, providing another way to communicate with your connections in the app.

Meta gave Threads its own DM functionality last month, after initially resisting the implementation of yet another messaging platform within its app network.

Threads had initially sought to refer Threads users to their Instagram DMs, instead of implementing a separate Threads inbox. But with Threads looking to gradually separate itself from IG, and its usage continuing to expand, it seems that the audience demand for a more Twitter-like experience on this front eventually proved too much to resist.

So now, Meta has a new element to grow on Threads, in expanded DM functionality, with image sharing being the first significant update in this respect.

Maybe, eventually, Threads DMs will also get group chats and encryption options as well, but right now, Threads messaging is fairly basic, providing direct connection between people who follow each other in the app.

And with Threads also getting its own chief today, further solidifying it as a solo entity, expanded DMs could be just one element that sees more focus and refinement moving forward.

Threads is still in the process of rolling out DMs to all users.
