A 15-year-old boy died after a high-pressure air hose was inserted into his body in what was reportedly meant to be a workplace prank but is now being compared to “torture.”

Muhammed Kendirci was seriously injured following the incident, which occurred on Friday, Nov. 14 at a carpentry workshop in Bozova — a municipality and district of Şanlıurfa Province in Turkey — according to local outlets Milliyet, Sozcu and Hurriyet

The victim reportedly suffered serious internal organ damage and was treated in the intensive care unit for five days, before dying from his injuries on the morning of Nov. 19, per Hurriyet.

On the day of the incident, Kendirci was allegedly restrained with his hands tied by a fellow apprentice named Habip Aksoy and a friend whose identity is unknown, the outlet stated. His pants were then forcibly removed, and a high-pressure compressor was reportedly used to inject air into his rectum.

Medical teams were dispatched to the scene at the time, and Kendirci was taken to Bozova Mehmet Enver Yıldırım State Hospital, Milliyet stated.

The victim was then transferred to Balıklıgöl State Hospital, before being moved to Harran University Research and Application Hospital, per the outlet.

Aksoy has since been arrested again by the on-call court after previously being released on probation amid the ongoing investigation, Hurriyet reported.

Following his death, Kendirci’s funeral was held at the Bozova Asri Cemetery, according to Sozcu.

Suat Özçağdaş, who is a member of the Turkish parliament, was among those commenting on the incident, writing on X that the teenager was “tortured while working as an apprentice in a carpentry workshop,” stating that the victim should have been at school instead in the translated statement.

“The prosecutor’s office initially stated that the incident was a joke, not torture,” Özçağdaş wrote on Nov. 19. “Having struggled to hold on to life for five days, Muhammed tragically passed away today.”

An investigation into the incident is reportedly still ongoing.
