Tay-K‘s sister takes the stand in a Texas court today before the jury sentences the rapper in his second murder trial, and describes a horrifying pattern of abuse the siblings experienced as children.
Tay-K’s Sister Recalls Tay-K Being Tied to an Ironing Board and Beaten
Kayla Beverly, Tay-K’s sister testified as a witness for the defense in Bexar County Court in Texas on Tuesday (April 15) before the sentencing was handed down to the 24-year-old rapper, who was found guilty this week of murdering 23-year-old Mark Anthony Saldivar in 2017.
Her testimony painted a picture of a childhood of abuse, a likely move from the defense so that the jury may give Tay-K a more lenient sentence. Tay-K’s sister described the two being put in foster care when she was 7 and he was 5, recounting how Child Protective Services came in and took them away from their mother. They were brought to an orphanage and later went to live with a foster family in Las Vegas. At some point, the siblings returned to the care of their father in Texas and began experiencing his physical abuse when disciplining them. Beverly alleged that their father would beat them with a 2×4 and tie Tay-K to an ironing board.
“His punishments were too big, like if we got bad grades then we would be punished,” Kayla Beverly recalled of her father’s abuse. “The whoopings got worse and worser. And then now it’s not a belt, now it’s a 2×4 [piece of lumber]. We get a certain number of hits. We get hit and then we have to lay there and we can’t get up. There was times when, Taymor [Tay-K] was younger than me and he would cry. And just maybe they would think he was overdramatic, so they would tie him down to an ironing board, strap him down. Stuff like that.”
On April 14, Tay-K was found guilty of murder in the killing of Mark Anthony Saldivar and found not guilty of the charge of capital murder. He shot and killed Saldivar while on the run for the 2016 murder of 21-year-old Ethan Walker, during which he released the infamous song “The Race.” The Texas rhymer was 16 years old at the time of the crimes.
Now the jury decides the rapper’s punishment, with a possible sentence ranging from 5 to 99 years in prison. Tay-K is already serving a 55-year sentence after being convicted in 2019 for his role in Walker’s death.
Bexar County District Court Judge Stephanie Boyd determines whether he will serve his new sentence concurrently with the Walker case or whether he will do them consecutively. The sentencing for the Saldivar case will likely come tomorrow.
