Prince Louis Chats in Rare Video Showing 7th Birthday Photo Shoot

Prince Louis is jumping full-on into a new year!

Kate Middleton and Prince William shared a new video of their youngest child on social media on April 23, in connection with Louis’ 7th birthday. The rare footage appears to be a behind-the-scenes look at his birthday photo shoot, in which photographer Josh Shinner captured the young royal smiling (and showing off his missing front teeth!) in a snap released for the occasion.

The video — captioned “Seven today!” — shows Prince Louis posing outdoors and having a bit of fun, including running up to the camera and grinning with his face close to the lens.

At one point, Louis is heard speaking: “I can jump down from there,” he said, pointing before giving the camera a smirk. A few seconds later, he is shown taking a leap from the top of a large log.

While Louis joins the royal family at public events a few times a year, often stealing the show with his cute antics, it’s rare to hear him speak.

Royal watchers previously heard a glimpse of the prince’s voice (along with his older siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte) in a 2020 video in which they each asked TV star and naturalist Sir David Attenborough a question about animals.

Prince Louis, then just 2, adorably inquired, “What animal do you like?” (As it turns out, Attenborough is a fan of monkeys.)

While the video of Prince Louis was an unexpected addition, the Prince and Princess of Wales have released portraits of their three children each year on their birthdays to acknowledge well-wishers.

Princess Kate has often gotten behind the camera for the annual photos, but this year, they tapped Shinner for Prince Louis’ 7th birthday portrait. The photographer has snapped the family before, including the black-and-white family photo that they used on their 2023 Christmas card.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ family have more milestones to look forward to in the coming weeks. The royal couple will have their 14th wedding anniversary on April 29 — which they will spend in Scotland, the country where they attended college together and fell in love — and Princess Charlotte’s 10th birthday is coming up on May 2.
