Mark Wahlberg is connecting with his kids through his films in a new way now that they’re older.

The actor, 54, was joined by his family — his kids Ella, 22, Michael, 19, Brendan, 17, and Grace, 15. Durham, 47, and his wife Rhea Durham — at the red carpet premiere of Play Dirty held at the SVA Theater on Wednesday, Sept. 24 in New York City, where he told PEOPLE how his children have a new appreciation for his work.

“We saw this movie together, we were in Paris, we were all hanging out in Paris,” he told PEOPLE exclusively. “I was doing Family Plan 2, and they love this movie. So now, they love seeing dad swearing, kicking ass — all the things that they couldn’t see when they were kids, they’re now allowed to see. And I think they enjoy those more.”

For the red carpet outing, Wahlberg wore a charcoal crew neck and a pair of khaki pants. Durham wore a black floor-length strapless gown paired with double necklaces.

Ella wore a magenta floor-length silk gown, while her younger sister Grace opted for a black knee-length dress and white sneakers. Brendan kept it casual in a grey henley shirt and dark wash denim, while his brother Michael wore navy pants, a pale blue shirt, a brown belt and dress shoes.

“I’m so excited that all of my kids [are here], because my daughter’s been away at school, everybody’s kind of doing their own thing at this age,” Wahlberg added. “I really want to just spend time with them. So it’s great that we all got to get together, even if it’s just for the night.”

The actor went on to detail the long hours on set in Australia. “You know, it’s a difficult shoot a long time away from home, we shot in Australia. It’s very far away, missing family,” Wahlberg added, before revealing that Durham and their four children came to visit him in Australia during the shoot.

“I think that’s the biggest sacrifice, but you know, for me the action stuff is easy,” he continued. “I’ve kind of I’ve done it all. I’m not worried about doing my own stunts. I’m more worried about bringing this character to life.”

The actor stars opposite LaKeith Stanfield, Rosa Salazar, Tony Shaloub, Keegan-Michael Key, and more in Play Dirty. The crime drama follows “a ruthless thief and his expert crew stumble onto the heist of a lifetime,” per IMDB.

The film is based on the Parker series of novels by Donald E. Westlake, who wrote under the pen name Richard Stark.

The family outing comes just a day after Durham and the couple’s children paid Wahlberg a visit on set in a classroom in Boston.

Durham shared the Instagram post on Tuesday, Sept. 23, in which Wahlberg could be seen sitting down at a desk.

In the photo, Durham is smiling as she stands with a hand placed on her husband’s shoulder. Daughter Grace can be seen standing on one side of her, and on the other, Michael and Brendan posed behind their dad. Michael also had his arm around his girlfriend.

“On set 🎥🎞️ @markwahlberg,” Durham simply captioned the shot.

Play Dirty will be released on Amazon Prime Video on Oct. 1.
