  • The man voiced his disappointment, but now she claims he is gaslighting her

A man was let down on his birthday after his girlfriend failed to plan a party for him despite being asked.

On Reddit, the user explained that ahead of his 30th birthday last month, his girlfriend asked what he wanted from her. In response, the man said he would love to have a “small” get-together of “just a few close family and friends,” noting that it would be “great” if she could organize it.

“There’s a bar near us that lets you book the place out for free if you have at least 10 people as it’s a small place so I mentioned possibly going there and she bobbed and said okay,” he writes in the post.

However, when his birthday came around, he “got nothing like that.” Instead of a “gathering or any sort of celebration,” he “got a card and a couple of little gifts (2 gift cards and a book).”

“I was upset at this and my girlfriend asked me why I was upset and I explained it to her,” he continues. “She said it would have been a hassle trying to get everyone together and would have took a lot of work to organise.”

“I told her she knew how much it would have meant to me and that she literally asked what I wanted from her and then chose to ignore it. I said it hurts hearing her say I’m basically not worth any effort.”

However, she said he “should have done it [him]self” and that he “was trying to guilt trip” her, insisting he was “being too unfair” and “should be happy with what I got.”

“I told her I was just expressing how I felt about it,” he recalls of their conversation,

“I told her she doesn’t get to tell me when I can and can’t be upset and that it obviously hurts knowing your partner doesn’t care enough to even try to organise what I wanted for my birthday.”

Still, she says he is “deliberately trying to make her feel bad,” leading the poster to question if he is in the wrong for his reaction.

However, other Redditors firmly sided with the man, noting that she is “trying to make herself the victim in a situation that she created.”

“Obviously her not taking a couple minutes out of her day to ring a few people to have a birthday get together is a red flag, but the fact that she’s turning this around on you and making you the villain is the bigger red flag,” one user replied. “Thats manipulative behavior and it’s pretty gross.”

The commenter also noted that “getting your partner a gift card for their birthday feels really impersonal, it’s almost like she couldn’t be bothered to know what you like or take the time to go out and get you something that was actually meaningful.”
