A man feels like he could “snap” at his girlfriend’s family at any moment due to the constant criticisms they are making about him.

In a post shared on Reddit’s “Am I The A——?” forum, the 23-year-old man said he is living with his girlfriend in her family’s home, along with her sister, cousin and grandpa.

“I’ve been here for less than a year,” he wrote. “When I first moved in, I had a job, but shortly after, I was fired after getting sick for a week straight, and have been unemployed for a few months.”

Explaining that he is “actively job hunting,” the man continued, “I apply to five jobs per week and get either rejected or ghosted — meaning no more income, so I’m unable to contribute. I helped with a few [bills] in the beginning of my stay, but unfortunately my savings has run dry.”

According to the Redditor, being unemployed doesn’t mean he sits “around all day.” He explained, “I help clean and cook for myself when [my girlfriend] isn’t home.”

And though he wrote that his girlfriend “is on my side of this” and “knows both sides of the situation,” the man said she “leans more to me than her family, because she finds this behavior unacceptable for people who are supposed to be more mature than this.”

The man further explained that the discontent in the house stems from financial struggles, as the girlfriend’s grandpa missed years of mortgage payments and now expects the rest of the family to help contribute.

He added that his girlfriend’s grandparent “calls me names like ‘lazy, fat, stupid’ or sometimes worse.”

“I’m reaching the breaking point,” the 23-year-old wrote. “I haven’t snapped yet, but the constant comments are discouraging me and getting me more and more stressed. If I do snap, it would just be a few words — I would probably yell things I shouldn’t and would most certainly get kicked out.”

As he asked how to best handle the tricky family situation, the man was met with advice from others on Reddit.

“It won’t make life any easier to snap at him. That’s just the reality,” one wrote of the family relationship, adding of the man’s job search: “You should also be blasting way more generic applications to service and retail jobs — like dozens per day if possible.”

“You don’t deserve the verbal abuse,” they continued. “You’re in a tough spot, but the only way out of it is likely taking whatever work, no matter how ‘menial,’ and working your way towards getting out of there.”
