Stephen Malkmus and Kurt Vile both headlined Raised By Sound Fest in Memphis, Tennessee last night. The respective Pavement and Violators frontmen teamed up to pay homage to Memphis’ own Oblivians, doing a cover of their 1996 hedonistic anthem “Feel Real Good.”
Vile’s set also featured a cover of the Lemonheads’ “If I Could Talk I’d Tell You,” and while video of last night’s performance isn’t available right now, he’s done that song before. Meanwhile Malkmus’ set featured some of his own solo songs, but it was particularly heavy on Pavement classics including “Range Life,” “Spit On A Stranger,” and “In The Mouth A Desert.” He also covered “Federal Dust,” which he co-wrote as a member of Silver Jews back in the day.
Incidentally, Malkmus’ solo catalog was also released on Bandcamp last Friday, and he was also just featured in the New York Times magazine’s big retrospective piece on Gen X, for which he was photographed on top of some lockers with Gregg Araki and Johnny Knoxville.
