As you’ve very likely heard by now, James Van Der Beek passed away on Wednesday after a battle with colon cancer.

The actor, beloved and best known for his role on Dawson’s Creek, was 48 years old.

Van Der Beek leaves behind a small screen legacy and a big screen legacy (highlighted by his role in Varsity Blues), but, most important, he leaves behind a wife (Kimberly) and six children.

According to a GoFundMe created by Kimberly’s friends, tragically, the family is out of money and struggling to stay in their home after Van Der Beek’s death on February 11.

“James Van Der Beek was a beloved husband, father, and friend who touched the lives of everyone around him,” the GoFundMe page reads.

“After a long and courageous battle with cancer, James passed away on February 11, 2026 leaving behind his devoted wife, Kimberly, and their six wonderful children.

“Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care.”

The fundraiser goes on as follows:

“In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds.

They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time.

“The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.”

Van Der Beek had been battling stage 3 colorectal cancer, a fight that he spoke of often in moving social media posts.

News of James’ death comes courtesy of a post from his wife and the mother of his six kids, Kimberly Van Der Beek.

“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” Kimberly wrote this morning, adding:

“He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time.”

This new GoFund Me post emphasized that funds will cover essential living expenses, bills and also support the children’s education.

“Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives,” reads the message. “Thank you for considering a gift to support them.”

In an Instagram Story post, Kimberly said that her friends launched the page for her.

“With gratitude and a broken heart,” she wrote.

As of this writing, the page has raised $102,000 in donations. We send our thoughts to the friends, family members and loved ones of James Van Der Beek. May he rest in peace.
