Hey, remember how Instagram was hyping up its separate “Edits” app ahead of a planned March release?
Yeah, that obviously didn’t happen, but Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has today provided an update on the work that’s going into its dedicated creation app, essentially IG’s own version of CapCut, which is set to be launched to users very soon.
Mosseri says that Edits is “getting really close”, and should be available within “the next couple of weeks.” Mosseri says that a selected group of creators are currently beta testing the app, with a view to the release of an initial, “simple” version shortly.
Mosseri has also addressed a key question about the potential cost of the app.
As a comparison, CapCut is available for free, but there are subscription fees for its more advanced features.
Which sounds like the same approach that Edits will take:
“[Edits] will be free. I think over time, we might have some paid features where we’re going to need to cover costs of things, like compute for big AI features. But in general, we want to create as many features that are free as possible, because the more people can create, the more they will create, the better Instagram will be, and the more we will all benefit.”
Instagram has already previewed some of the coming AI features for the app, including AI-generated backgrounds and still image animation.

It seems that Meta could also be eyeing more advanced AI elements, which will be pushed to Edits as opposed to the main IG app.
And those extra features may end up being paid add-ons. Which could be worth it. I mean, if they can produce results as good as this, then yeah, I’m guessing people will pay:
It looks like a solid editing and creation app either way, and you can bet that a heap of IG creators will be eagerly downloading Edits the moment it becomes available.
Which, again, should be very soon.
