“VALUS. Will miss u, U Were Funny, crazy, pain in the a**, GREAT FRIEND, kids💜U, BRILLIANT as Mark Twain, BRAVE here during ur sickness,” the singer wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, April 2.
Cher affectionately referred to Kilmer as “Valus,” a nickname she used when they dated in the early ‘80s. The 78-year-old’s post makes references to Kilmer’s impressive portrayal of Mark Twain, referencing his iconic one-man show Citizen Twain. She also acknowledged Kilmer’s courage in battling throat cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2015, applauding him for being “BRAVE” during his illness.
She shared a bit of the backstory behind their playful names, previously telling People in 2021, “Val didn’t want to yell ‘Cher,’ and I didn’t want to yell ‘Val.’” They humorously adopted the titles “Valus Maximus” and “Cherus Reprimandus” as part of their inside jokes.
Cher and Kilmer dated for two years from 1982 to 1984, with their 13-year age difference becoming a topic of discussion in Hollywood at the time.
