Hazel English is Australian, not English. She’s currently based in Oakland, which is also not English. English is her last name and the language that she speaks, but as far as I can tell, it does not describe anything else about her. Back in 2016, Hazel English was a Stereogum Artist To Watch. Last year, she released Real Life, an album produced by Jackson Phillips, better known as Day Wave. Now, she’s got a new single, and Phillips produced that one, too.
The new Hazel English song “Gimme” is a bright, shimmery indie pop number that English and Jackson Phillips wrote together. It’s got jangly guitars and sighing vocals, and it radiates pleasant warmth. As best I can tell, English shot the video at JFK’s retro-futuristic TWA Flight Center, and it looks glamorous as hell. Watch it below.
