Gorillaz lean into dub with the help of IDLES frontman Joe Talbot on “The God of Lying,” the third single from their upcoming album, The Mountain. Talbot also appears in the song’s visualizer, which can be seen below.
The track was penned by Gorillaz leader Damon Albarn and Tlabot and features Ajay Prasanna on bansuri and Viraj Acharya on percussion by Viraj Acharya. “Can I tell you a secret? Doubt is very tiring but questioning things is really good for you,” said Albarn under the guise on his group alter-ego 2D.
On The Mountain, which will be released March 20 on the band’s KONG label, Gorillaz are flanked by Sparks, former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, Anoushka Shankar, Asha Bhosle, Asha Puthli, Bizarrap, The Roots’ Black Thought, Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys, Jalen Ngonda, Kara Jackson, Omar Souleyman, the Clash’s Paul Simonon, Trueno and Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def).
The voices of departed musicians such as Bobby Womack, De La Soul’s Dave Jolicoeur, the Fall’s Mark E. Smith, Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen, rapper Proof and even actor Dennis Hopper are also represented on the project.
Gorillaz will support The Mountain with a U.K. and Ireland arena tour next spring, beginning March 21 in Manchester. Appearances at summer European festivals will follow.
