First-Time Alabama Mom Gives Birth to 13-Lb. Baby Girl

An Alabama mother made a special delivery, giving birth to a 13 lb., 4 oz. baby girl — two weeks early.

Pamela Mann gave birth to Paris Halo on Tuesday, March 4, at Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala., according to Fox affiliate WBRC-TV and NBC affiliate WVTM-TV.

And while the baby had measured large on an ultrasound by both an ultrasound tech and her OB/GYN, Mann told WVTM that the extent of the newborn’s debut caught everyone by surprise.

“Everybody in the ER — they were amazed,” the 31-year-old delivery driver said about her baby, who was originally due March 20. “They were like, ‘Omg, oh, this is a big baby!’ ”

Paris Halo is about double the size of an average newborn, according to the World Health Organization.

At a doctor’s appointment about a month ago, Mann said it was determined that she should have a C-section, which was scheduled for Tuesday.

“About four weeks ago, my doctor measured the baby at about 8 lbs., come to find out she was way over what both were saying,” the new mother said, adding that the ultrasound tech estimated that the baby weighed about 10 lbs.

But when it came time to deliver Paris, Mann faced some trepidation.

“The doctor pulls her out of me, and all the nurses are like, ‘Oh God!’ ‘Wow!’ ” Mann told Today. “Then I started freaking out because I had no idea what was happening.”

Speaking with WVTM, she recalled asking, ‘Is something wrong? What’s wrong?’ And once they actually just said she’s just big, I just broke out into tears.”

Now, Mann is basking in her achievement, while the newborn is expected to be discharged from the hospital’s NICU in the coming days, according to Today.

“She’s getting a little extra love and care,” Mann said. “But she’s doing great.”
