Ebbb Shares New Song “Book That You Like”: Listen

Last year, London-based trio Ebbb released their debut EP All At Once, which was angelic and expansive like a lucid dream. Their music reminds me of Fleet Foxes, Animal Collective, and the Beach Boys, but it really sounds like cherubs having a rave. Today, they’re back with their third and final single of the year, and it’s pretty friggin’ good.

“Book That You Like” opens with a sticky, narrow drumbeat and haloes of synths. There’s some classical guitar plucks that have been manipulated and layers of chiffon vocals. “Send me a little excerpt of that book that you like/ The one with introspective guy who loses his mind,” Will Rowland sings. There’s a giddiness to the track’s cyclic nature, but its repetitiveness also emphasizes the rumination and madness that Rowland sings about.

“This song explores the tension between introspection as art and introspection as harm,” Rowland said in a press release. “It’s about the way we sometimes glorify art that depicts breakdown and despair, and how immersing ourselves in that narrative can exacerbate our own cycles of rumination. Sometimes consuming material that reflects our darkness can become a feedback loop.”
