David Duchovny is listing the out-of-this-world Malibu, Calif., property he’s called home for the last two decades.

The home, which has an asking price of $12.5 million, has been the X-Files actor’s primary residence for more than 20 years and is located in the gated Point Dume community.

Duchovny, 64, who splits his time between California and New York, lived in the home with his girlfriend, Monique Pendleberry, 31, and their dogs Brick and Rookie.

“Malibu has always been a magical place for me. I’ve been naturally drawn to it, and Point Dume, in particular, stands out as a true geographical marvel — a place unlike anywhere else,” Duchovny says in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “Even though it’s just 30 minutes from town, it feels like an entirely different world. That sense of wonder first captured me, and my appreciation for it has only grown over time.”

The main house offers three bedrooms and 3,577 sq. ft., not including a one-bedroom train caboose structure located on the property where Duchovny wrote his 2021 novel Truly Like Lightning. He also records episodes of his Fail Better podcast in the unique outbuilding.

The open-concept layout of the main house provides a seamless transition between the outdoor and indoor living spaces. The wooden deck and lounge with built-in heaters located outside next to the lap pool provides a place to relax, complete with a sunken firepit, built-in seating, outdoor kitchen, Jacuzzi, cold plunge and outdoor shower.

Several custom built-in bookshelves currently house Duchovny’s expansive collection and his kitchen and bar area are also outfitted with modern appliances. There are many pocket glass doors leading outside and bringing in the natural light.

While the property isn’t directly on the sand, it comes with private beach access included.

“My favorite space in the home has always been the great room,” Duchovny shares. “In New York, everything feels more closed off, so I really appreciated the open-concept design and the natural light here. We spend 70 to 80 percent of our time in the great room — with the kitchen flowing into the space, it’s a place where everyone can be together.”
