Any time you see the name “Colleen” on Stereogum, it’s probably going to be us gushing over the perpetually underrated fuzz-pop singer-songwriter Colleen Green. Not this time, though! (Well, maybe a little bit this time. Coleen Green rules. You should listen to her.) Colleen is also the stage name of Cécile Schott, a French producer and multi-instrumentalist who weirdly beautiful instrumentals. She’s been at it for a while; we posted her track “Captain Of None” a decade ago. She’s got a new album coming next year.
Today, Colleen announces her new album Libres antes del final. That title is French for Free before the end. In a press release, she tells a long story about how the album was inspired by learning to swim as an adult, in the Mediterranean. I can’t relate to that. Lead single “Antídoto” is a minimal synth-pulsing instrumental that lasts for six and a half minutes. When it’s on, it feels like it’s massaging one particular part of my brain. I don’t know what that part is called, but it’s kind of in the upper left part. That part really liked it.
In that press release, Colleen says, “It is the sun-drenched, edgy reply to moments when you feel anger, it is my musical way of saying I can turn the situation upside down and build my own antidote to the negative feelings consuming me.” Check out the song and the Libres antes del final tracklist below.
