Bride Says She’s Still ‘Angry’ Over Her Dad’s ‘Horrible’ Wedding Speech

  • A bride shared in a post on Reddit that she got married a few months ago but is still ‘angry’ over her dad’s ‘horrible’ wedding speech
  • She said her dad didn’t even mention his daughter and new son-in-law in the speech and cracked some off-color jokes
  • “He was the worst, and it’s a day I can’t get back,” she wrote

A woman says she celebrated her wedding a few months ago — but instead of basking in the happy memories, she’s still feeling “angry” about her dad’s speech.

She shared her story in a post on Reddit‘s “Wedding Shaming” forum, explaining that every time she thinks about his speech she gets upset. She even asked her videographer not to include it in their final wedding video.

The OP (original poster) then went on to provide some context to her complicated relationship with her father.

“Me and my dad were close when I was growing up — I was definitely a daddy’s girl. We aren’t close now. He’s in his 60s and can be sexist, I’m a bit of a feminist and he knows this,” she wrote.

She said he was “very involved” in the wedding planning leading up to the big day and at times got “overly bossy.” The pair ended up having a fight two days before the wedding and her dad “never apologized.”

“In fact, I was so uncomfortable by it that I texted him asking if we could make up even though it was him being horrible,” she noted.

The OP then detailed her frustrations over her dad’s speech. “This man didn’t bother to mention me or my husband apart from saying ‘OP is all grown up now, I’m glad,’ ” she recalled.

“His next statement was ‘if you don’t think jokes are funny you shouldn’t be here,’ ” she continued. “I instantly thought, guess I shouldn’t be here when he started to read off the old ball and chain jokes he got off Google and made jokes about not listening to his wife.”

The OP said her wedding guests didn’t appear to appreciate the humor.

“Not a single guest laughed. He then toasted to my mother-in-law, who completely blanked him because he made her uncomfortable earlier that day,” she wrote.

When it was time for the two to do their father-daughter dance, the OP’s dad got emotional — but his tearful reaction didn’t soften her feelings about the speech.

“He started crying, but honestly, I was just so disgusted by his behavior. Guests were saying to me how bad it was, and it even pissed off my husband,” the OP explained.

Summing up the experience, she wrote: “He was the worst, and it’s a day I can’t get back.”

In the comments section, readers sympathized with the OP’s situation and many of them shared similar stories in commiseration.

“My dad told everyone at my reception that I was like the first pancake,” one person shared. “You know — the one that is f—– up, burnt, weirdly oily, etc.”

“My dad’s speech at my wedding was, ‘she’s your problem now.’ We don’t talk anymore,” someone else chimed in.

“That’s unfortunate. I’m sorry,” another person wrote. “I still remember my dad’s speech. He told my husband that soon I’ll be fat and ugly. He was trying to make a joke. No one laughed.”

Yet another reader noted that “people turn so weird at weddings.”

One user reassured the OP that her dad’s behavior only reflected poorly on him, not her. “Rest assured no one blamed or judged you, but surely were sympathetic that you had to smile through that,” they wrote.
