Grande kicked off the Wicked: For Good press tour with a new hair color. The star shocked fans with a brunette hairstyle, marking the first time in three years she rocked a darker hair color.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Oscar nominee revealed the meaning behind the transformation.

“It’s fun to play with the storytelling on the press tour,” she said before explaining how she approached dressing for promotion this time around versus last.

“With the first [Wicked] press tour, I wanted to celebrate Glinda in a more on-the-nose way, and be an extension of her and extend the time with her through clothes, through the blonde and through everything,” Grande explained.

“Now I can show up as the actress who played her and play into the darker tones of the movie. It’s fun to play with hair and makeup and fashion,” she added.

Grande has teamed up with image architect and Project Runway judge Law Roach for the second Wicked press tour. In October, Roach told PEOPLE that they’d spent “hours and hours” in fittings while also strengthening their friendship, which dates back to 2016.

“What people need to know about her is her gratitude and appreciation, one to be playing, you know, this role, but also, she’s so excited and grateful to the designers who are making these gowns and dresses for her,” he said.

For the London Wicked premiere on Monday, Nov. 10, Grande wore a vintage black one-shoulder ballgown that was originally worn in the 1952 musical film Lovely to Look At, and created by famed costume designer Gilbert Adrian.

The late designer is known for his work on The Wizard of Oz (1939) and enhancing the world of Oz with Dorothy’s ruby slippers and Glinda’s bubble dress. The gown was sourced from Los Angeles’ Lily et Cie, which stocks gowns from the 20th and 21st centuries, Grande told British Vogue.

Grande remarked on how special it is not only to have the piece but also to wear it during the press tour. “To now have it in our personal vintage collection, and to wear something made by him on this carpet, feels so emotional and meaningful,” she said.

“Law and I cried many times during this fitting,” Grande continued.

She also told the outlet that despite wearing lots of pink Glinda-inspired looks throughout the Wicked: Part 1 press tour, she’s trying to channel Glinda’s darker side this time around.

Grande noted the looks will be “more mature [and] more emotional. It still feels like an extension of Glinda’s story arc. We’re just telling a different part of her story,” she added.
