Karla Souza made a lasting impression as the sharp and ambitious Laurel Castillo on ABC’s hit legal drama How to Get Away with Murder.
Over the course of six seasons, her character evolved from a driven law student to a central figure in the show’s many twists and betrayals. Years after the series wrapped, Souza still carries the experience and the friendships with her.
At the Los Angeles premiere of her latest project, 56 Days, the 40-year-old actress revealed which of her former castmates she is still in touch with. “Michaela, yes. Aja [Naomi King] is my boo,” Souza tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I love her so much.”

“She's my sister and I don't have that many friends in the industry," Souza continues. And so she's one of the few moms who is in this industry, who's married, who I can relate to in so many ways. But she's just a wonderful cheerleader to my struggles as a person. And so I just love reaching out to her.”
Souza tells PEOPLE she also stays in touch with Jack Falahee, who played Connor Walsh, another member of the Keating Five in the show, as well as Viola Davis, 60, who portrayed Professor Annalise Keating.
“Viola, we send emails once in a while, catching up with what our lives, our kids mostly. And our faith. We really relate faith-wise to one another,” Souza reveals. “So our husbands are very similar. Julius [Tennon] is very similar to my husband, and so we laugh about that.”

Souza is now taking on another gripping role in 56 Days, premiering February 18, 2026.
Based on Catherine Ryan Howard’s novel, the psychological thriller follows Oliver and Ciara, who fall into an intense romance after a chance meeting — only for the story to end in violence when a decomposed body is discovered in Oliver’s apartment 56 days later.

In the show, Souza plays detective Lee Reardon, a determined investigator with secrets of her own. “Once I found out the detective isn't just going to be finding out the plot of the murder on the show, but that she also has secrets to uncover as she uncovers the murder. That's what really caught my attention,” Souza explains.
Still, even after being cast to play roles that demand emotional depth and stamina, Souza says her most “stressful” job happens off camera.
“Mom of three, for sure,” Souza tells PEOPLE. “Yeah, because on camera, I get lines… Being a mom of three is like, I'm still trying to figure it out.”
