Broken Social Scene Comes Back ‘Around’

Canadian indie collective Broken Social Scene will end a nearly nine-year gap between albums with the May 8 release of Remember the Humans (Arts & Crafts). The follow-up to 2017’s Hug of Thunder is led by the track “Not Around Anymore,” which can be sampled below. Its accompanying video was directed by Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew with Jordan D Allen and Rachel McLean.

The 12-track Remember the Humans was produced with Dave Newfeld, who was behind the boards for BSS’ acclaimed 2002 debut You Forgot It in People and its self-titled 2005 follow-up but hasn’t worked with the group in two decades. “His production suits the chaos of our songwriting so well,” says group member Charles Spearin of Newfeld. “He’s got a childlike energy that is really contagious.”

The album features contributions from vocalist Hannah Georgas, who takes the lead on “Only the Good I Keep,” former touring member Lisa Lobsinger, who handles the singing on “Relief,” and Feist, who is out front on the resurrected Hug of Thunder outtake “What Happens Now.” Notes Spearin, “there’s a different kind of honesty in this record. We’ve had success, we’ve lost friends, we’ve lost parents, we’re at this ‘what happens next?’ stage in life.”

“In 2026, you’re going to see a lot of resurgence of people going back to the roots of who they are, because things in their lifetime have gotten quite lost,” adds Drew, who lost his mother during the recording sessions. “I think we’ve let each other down, and I think it’s art that always tries to prevail [and] get us back on track.”

Broken Social Scene is rounding up longtime Canadian friends and collaborators Metric and Stars for the North American All the Feelings tour in support of Remember the Humans, which will begin June 8 in Austin, Tx. Tickets go on sale Feb. 6. Metric’s own new album, Romanticize the Drive, will be released April 24 on Thirty Tigers and sports first single “Victim of Luck,” which is out now.
