Jimmy Kimmel Slams Donald Trump Over ‘Hateful and Vile’ Rob Reiner Comments

Jimmy Kimmel condemned President Donald Trump’s recent comments over the deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

The Jimmy Kimmel Live! talk show host, 58, slammed Trump’s recent comments toward the Stand By Me director and his wife — who were found dead in their L.A. home on Dec. 14 — as being “hateful and vile” in his monologue on Monday, Dec. 15.

Rob, 78, and Michele, 68, were found dead in their Brentwood, Calif., home on Sunday, Dec. 14. Multiple sources close to the family told PEOPLE that Rob and Michele’s son Nick killed his parents.

“… The murder of one of our greatest directors and patriots, Rob Reiner, and his wife Michele Reiner, and what we need in a time like this — besides common sense when it comes to guns and mental health care — is compassion and leadership. We did not get that from our president because he has none of it to give,” Kimmel said during his monologue.

He then read out the statement on Reiner and his wife’s death that the president shared on Truth Social, in which Trump, 79, claimed that the “tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director” and comedy star’s death was “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.”

The late-night TV host criticized the statement, saying, “His description of what happened, of course, is not at all what happened, and this is exactly what I’ve spoken about before, this rush to pin the tail on the donkey in pursuit of the Trump-friendly narrative.”

“Not to mention blaming his death on the fact that he is an outspoken liberal, insulting someone who’s just been murdered, who leaves children behind without having any idea of what actually happened. It’s so hateful and vile,” he added.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! also aired a clip of Trump, 79, being asked by a reporter in the White House directly about whether he stood by his previous comments on Reiner, to which he doubled down on his earlier comments about Reiner having had “Trump derangement syndrome.”

“That corroded brain is in charge of our lives,” Kimmel said after the video ended. “… And I have to say, I know from my personal interactions with Rob Reiner that he would want us to keep pointing out the loathsome atrocities that continue to ooze out of this sick and irresponsible man’s [mouth], and so we’re going to do that over and over again until the rest of us wake up.” 

Kimmel isn’t the only one who has blasted Trump for his response. Whoopi Goldberg criticized Trump for his rhetoric on Monday’s episode of The View and proclaimed he is not her president.

“I don’t understand the man in that White House. Because he talks so much about Charlie Kirk and caring, and suddenly this is what he puts out,” she told the panel. “Have you no shame? No shame at all? Can you get any lower? I don’t think so.”

Lawmakers, including Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, also denounced Trump’s comments on the death of Rob and his wife, Michele, saying, “This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.”

“Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy, especially when it ends in murder,” she added.
