Charli xcx Blurs Reality In ‘The Moment’ Trailer

Is this real life, or just fantasy? That’s the blurry line Charli xcx navigates in the trailer for her new film The Moment, in which she portrays a thinly veiled version of her arena-filling, pop star self. The movie will be released in theaters Jan. 26 by A24 and is the first from the artist’s Studio365 production company.

To add to the confusion, Charli uses her own name in The Moment and references her actual music, including the smash hit 2024 album brat. “When I felt like people started to care about me, nothing else mattered,” she says in the trailer. “Nothing was more important than brat.”

The artist recently confirmed to Vanity Fair that The Moment is “not a tour documentary or a concert film in any way, but the seed of the idea was conceived from this idea of being pressured to make one.” The film’s synopsis describes it as a musician navigating “the complexities of fame and industry pressure while preparing for her arena tour debut.”

The Moment co-stars Alexander Skarsgård, Rosanna Arquette, Jamie Demetriou, Kylie Jenner, Rachel Sennott, Kate Berlant, Arielle Dombasle and Hailey Benton Gates. It was directed by Aidan Zamiri, who is making his feature debut after previously working with Charli on such videos as “Guess” and “360” and helping steer the overall look of her brat campaign. He also wrote the screenplay in tandem with Bertie Brandes. The score was penned by A.G. Cook., who will act in the film with fellow artist Shygirl.

Charli is involved in a number of upcoming film projects, including the remake of Wuthering Heights, for which the soundtrack will double as her next album. She’ll also act in Dakota Johnson’s directing debut, A Tree Is Blue, Cathy Yan’s The Gallerist, Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex and a remake of the 1978 schlock horror classic Faces of Death.
