Jennifer Lopez to Compete for Best Supporting Actress Again After ‘Hustlers’ Oscar Snub

Jennifer Lopez is setting her sights on awards glory again.

For her performance in the upcoming Kiss of the Spider Woman — her first-ever movie musical — the actress, 56, will be submitted for consideration in Best Supporting Actress categories this award season, PEOPLE confirms. Gold Derby was first to report.

Kiss of the Spider Woman will be in theaters Oct. 10 after making its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

Lopez stars alongside Diego Luna and Tonatiuh in Kiss of the Spider Woman as a “silver screen diva” named Ingrid Luna.

An adaptation of the 1976 novel and its Tony Award–winning Broadway musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman comes from director Bill Condon, who wrote the Chicago movie musical that won six Oscars in 2003, including Best Picture.

Lopez is also an executive producer behind Kiss of the Spider Woman, as is her ex-husband Ben Affleck and Matt Damon through their Artists Equity production company.

Previously, Lopez has been nominated for two Golden Globe awards: Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for 1997’s Selena and Best Supporting Actress for 2019’s Hustlers. Hustlers also earned Lopez nods at the SAG Awards and Independent Spirit Awards, though it didn’t materialize into an Oscar nomination that season.

“The truth is, I really started to think I was gonna get nominated,” Lopez admitted in her 2022 documentary Halftime about the snub. “I got my hopes up because so many people were telling me I would be. And then it didn’t happen.”

“I had to ask myself, ‘What does that mean?’ I do this not for an award or do my hits up there and seem like I’m the best performer in the world,” added Lopez.

“No, I do this to tell stories and to effect change and to connect with people and make them feel things because I wanna feel something. That’s why I do it. Because I actually wanna make the world a better place in my own little way.”

Prior to those remarks, Lopez spoke about the Oscars disappointment in 2020, calling it a “bit of a letdown” and saying, “I got so many good notices, more than ever in my career.”

At the Sundance premiere of Kiss of the Spider Woman, Lopez got emotional and said during a Q&A appearance, “I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life.”

“When you talk about the importance of musicals, the reason that I even wanted to be in this business was because my mom would sit me in front of the TV … we’d come on once a year, West Side Story on Thanksgiving,” she recalled.

“I remember I was just mesmerized. I was like, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ That was always my goal. And this is the first time I actually got to do it. This crowd made my dream come true.”
