“This song encompasses everything I love about New York City,” Roan told fans ahead of the single’s release, “with the hope, heartbreak and healing that it has to offer us all.”
“The Subway” is Roan’s third single since her debut album, following last year’s “Good Luck, Babe!” and March’s “The Giver.” Roan released The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess in 2023. After a steady rollout for the record, Roan received a flood of new attention the following year after opening for Olivia Rodrigo on tour. She went on to win Best New Artist at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
