New Blood Orange LP Boasts Lorde, Turnstile, Zadie Smith

Dev Hynes is reactivating his Blood Orange project for its first album in seven years, Essex Honey, which will arrive Aug. 29 from RCA. Two tracks from it, “Mind Loaded” and “Somewhere in Between,” can be sampled below.

Essex Honey is loaded with high-profile collaborators, including Lorde, Caroline Polachek, Daniel Caesar, Mustafa, Turnstile’s Brendan Yates, Tariq Al-Sabir, author Zadie Smith (who is singing on an album for the first time), the Durutti Column, Wet’s Kelly Zutrau and actors Naomi Scott and Amandala Stenberg. The project is described as having been “created from a dreamscape of his journey working through grief.”

More from Spin:

Essex Honey is the follow-up to 2018’s Negro Swan. Since then, Hynes has written or produced for Carly Rae Jepsen, Turnstile and Wet and opened 15 Madison Square Garden concerts for Harry Styles. He’s also scored the Luca Guadagnino HBO show We Are Who We Are and the Paul Schrader film Master Gardener.

Blood Orange will support Essex Honey both at shows opening for Lorde in North American arenas and his own headlining gigs from Oct. 29 in Berlin. The run will conclude with six nights at New York’s Brooklyn Steel from Nov. 29-Dec. 5.
